BJJA GB Annuals 2010

On Saturday 20th Feb 2010 we took two juniors to the BJJA GB annual competition in Walsall.

They both entered the Random attacks and the continuous fighting competitions.

Spencer - Bronze Medal Randon Attacks - Luca - Gold Medal Continual Fighting

Spencer went out in the early rounds of the continuous fighting much to his disappointment. That said he showed the crowds and the officials on the day that he has lots of potential for the future, and maybe it just wasn't his day. However he also entered the Random attacks and eventually lost in the semi finals to a lad who equipped himself really well in that bout. Spencer needed to go early and I know he felt a little disappointed that he didn't do better. But he can feel proud of himself for achieving what he did in his first ever Jujitsu competition, that was a fantastic result.

Luca, like Spencer suffered in one of his competitions where he went out early in the Random Attacks. Again this was Luca's first experience of a Jujitsu competition and this was intended to be a revealing day where he could gain experience and understand some of the pressures associated with competition. After not achieving as well as he wanted in the Randoms I think Luca had a little talk to himself and went full head on with the Continuous fighting competition. This is a competition which reflects on your ability at sparring, randori and ground-work. So what a fabulous result when Luca at just 14 years old went on to win the final and along the way he disposed of two Black Belts.

This was a fantastic day with plenty of really good competitions and some fantastic sportsmanship being displayed. Everyone who entered should be proud of their achievements regardless of whether they won a final or not. The organisers really made it a splendid day and the whole event was run smoothly and on time.

A great day - with some great results

Well done Luca and Spencer you can both be very proud of yourselves, we at the club are proud of you.

  1. Hi, Andy Walker's (head coach at Poole Jujitsu) profile states that he was the 2008 BJJA GB Champion. However, I can't find him on the results list and I also don't remember fighting him. Can anyone shed some light on this?

  2. Went to this club a few times did`nt like it at all .They had no changing rooms people got changed in the hall the toilet was disgusting and there was an obstacle course to get to it.
I found people there quite rude especially the ones who where white belts I found them very unfriendly and did`nt make me feel welcome.
Got thrown around for 30 mins then was taken to one side and then shown how to break fall.
Was told that this club had united nation champions by the instructors yet there was only a few people with coloured belts and it was very disorganised and people did`nt seem to know what they were doing. The instructors came across as not interested in what they where doing.
The end of the lesson was the final nail in the coffin for me as we had to ground fight even though up to that point nothing was shown about this style and bar a couple of people I spent the next 10mins against people who more concerned in tearing my limbs off rather than helping me and the second lesson I went to people had to circle around a person and attack them while the person in the middle "dealt" with them this was quite good but yet again there was the ones mainly the spotty teenager element that where pummeling people into the matt even though the instructors had asked for control and to have respect for the lower grades.
All in all I found this club not to be the club the website had said it was and I actually found the cagefighters who trained there more friendly than the jujitsu people even though I was trying out jujitsu and did`nt have anything to do with them.
I have been told they have a new place now , that might change the toilet and changing room but I cannot see it changing the attitude of the place as they did`nt seem to have a club atmosphere there in the first place.
